Welcome to new NTRI staff

The National Trauma Research Institute NTRI has new staff members:

• Cecily Schwab - a clinical psychologist with a significant business background.  Cec started in December, so many would have met her already, but she is replacing Kate Scott on the NTRI Forums and also helping out with some of the CETBIR and VNAC work.
• Jarrod Donovan - an Alfred nurse who has ICU experience and will be working with the P.A.R.T.Y. team from today, assisting Janet McLeod in managing the the operations of the various parts of the program.
• Crystal Seah and Natalie Lott - both will be working with Ornella Clavisi/Marije Bosch as casual data collectors working on the NET Program.

NTRI also has new Honorary Researchers working on the Enhanced Crash Investigation Study (ECIS): Emily Robertson and Karen Vlok.

Farewell to our retiring Technical Services Manager, Russell Evans

CCS's Technical Services Manager, Mr Russell Evans, is retiring (but not shy). He has worked many years for Central Clinical School and in its previous incarnation, Central and Eastern Clinical School.

Survey of staff's fitness and wellbeing by Faculty: Responses due 16 Jan 2015

Two years ago Monash offered staff a health check and, from this, a report was developed on the health and wellbeing of our staff. It identified a number of issues that may be addressed by an increase in physical and mental health activity.

Therefore, in 2015, we would like to promote participation in the University’s health and wellbeing program.  Items on offer will include fitness programs like yoga and pilates, general health information sessions, nutrition based programs and mindfulness/resilience programs to name a few.

To assist us in tailoring the wellbeing program for our faculty, your feedback to the 2014 Faculty of Medicine Nursing and Health Sciences Staff Health and Wellbeing Survey would be extremely valuable. The survey closes on 16 January, 2015.

Finalised programs to be offered to the faculty will be available early in 2015.

Welcome to Catie Bleeker to the MAPrc team.  Caitie will be working with Emmy Gavrilids as a student volunteer. Her work interests are completing Bach of Psychology with Honours at Monash. Studying and working in areas based on research on psychosis, mood disorders and neurodegenerative disorders.

  

Welcome to Arup Dhar to the MAPrc team.  Arup is working with MAPrc as a Registrar and clinical research scientist. His work interests are depression, anxiety and  cardio metabolic disturbance in mental health.

• Dr Dan Andrews joins the Department of Immunology and will be heading the NK Cell Biology Lab.  Dan is located on Level 6 of the Alfred Centre.
• Dr Gennarino ('Jim') Rosella joins the Department of Gastroenterology.  Jim is a research scientist involved in clinical laboratory techniques.
• Ms Nu Tran Joins the Department of Gastroenterology as the Social Media Assistant.
• Vivian Monitto joins MAPrc's Women's Health Clinic Administration team

Ms Analin Baraniuk Joins MAPrc.  Her study and work interests include psychiatry, women's mental health, endocrinology, gynaecology and obstetrics. Analin is from Brazil and she enjoys physical exercise, cinema , ballroom dance and music.

Mr Jarrel Seah Joins the HealthMap project as their Technical Support Officer.  Jarrel is a CCS BMedSc(Hons) who, along with Jennifer Tang (SPHPM), recently won the Microsoft Imagine Cup.







Dr Beatriz Garcillan joins the Department of Immunology Beatriz is based in Prof Fabienne Mackay's lab.

Dr Christina Chang was previously in the Department of Infectious Diseases and moved to the Peter Doherty Institute with Sharon Lewin's group. Christina maintains her association with CCS as a Teaching associate, Undergraduate Teaching, UMED.

Farewell to Dr Charles Hardy, from the Department of Immunology. Charles has taken up a position as Research Operations Manager, Monash Biomedical Imaging, 770 Blackburn Rd (next to the synchrotron). Congratulations Charles on the new job.


Prof Sharon Lewin, Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases has taken on the role of Director at the new Peter Doherty Institute, University of Melbourne. Sharon and co-head A/Prof Paul Cameron are moving with their  research group to the Institute by 5 Sept 2014. The group includes Dr Vanessa Evans, Dr Jenny Anderson, Dr Suha Saleh, Dr Renee van der Sluis, Dr Hao Lu, Dr Jennifer Audsley, Dr Christina Chang, Dr Megan Crane, Dr Michael Roche, Dr Miranda Smith, Ajantha Solomon, Karey Cheong, Surekha Tanakoon, Ashanti Dantanarayana, PhD students Fiona Wightman, Nitasha Kumar, Simin Rezaei, Dr Kasha Singh, Dr Michelle Yong, and honours students Youry Kim and Michael Moso. Gavin in Action

Gavin Horrigan managed another overall win at St Arnaud on Sunday. He shot 73/75 in the second event and had to shoot off against two other AA Grade shooters with the same score. He managed to out his rivals in a thirteen target shoot off by hitting all targets with the first shot. The two other shooters got second barrels to bow out leaving him best shooter for that event overall. Gavin won a lovely salmon (OK it's pink!) sash and prize money. He shot 126/130 for the day and was runner up for High Gun (127/130). On top of all of this Ararat won the annual inter-club shoot comfortably against Callawadda-Stawell, Horsham and St Arnaud and got to keep the shield for another year.

Tania Bogomazova

Tania Bogomazova, our Graduate Accountant, has completed her 12 month R&R Accounting Services rotation and has returned to Corporate Finance Division. We now welcome Jeff Tang to our team as he completes a 12 month rotation in R & R as part of his Graduate Accountant’s program. Jeff will be based at the Alfred, and will also spend some time working from Parkville Campus. Jeff has already worked within Taxation, Group Accounting and Treasury at Monash University.

She is interested in major clinical psychological disorders, trauma and grief.  Maddy is from Australia and she enjoys studying, gym, reading and travel.

Welcome to Dr Ian Mosley, who joins the National Trauma Research Institute team.  Ian comes from The Howard Florey Institute where he was the Inaugural Clinical Research Fellow at the Spinal Research Institute. He is a former nurse, with degrees in business and a PhD ("Emergency Recognition and Management of Stroke").  Ian has brought his ISCRR Development grant "Management of Acute Spinal Trauma (MAST)" to the NTRI and will work a minimum of 2 days a week for the next year.  Ian is keen to connect with colleagues at the NTRI and Alfred to create new opportunities in trauma research.

Laura Williams joins Biomedical Sciences HR Services Hub as HR Client Support Officer replacing Gemma Patford who has moved into the Assistant HR Business Partner role in the Faculty of Science.  Laura has recently finished her undergraduate degree with Monash University and comes to us from Swinburne University working as an Administration Assistant in their Online Studies Department.

Mr Javier Haurat -  Immunology, Lab Operations Officer. For the past 6 years Javier has worked as a Laboratory Scientist and most recently as the Facility Manager at the Centre for Blood Cell Therapies at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. He has extensive experience in tissue culture, PC2 environments, GMP, training and OH&S policies and procedures. In his previous roles he was able to capture a range of areas within research including bench work, scientific reporting and biostatical collection, manipulation and collation.

Welcome to the following MAPrc staff: 
Professor David Barton, formally the Clinical Director of Psychiatry at Monash Health (which used to be called Southern Health) has joined MAPrc/CCS as a new adjunct Monash University Professor of Psychiatry. David has an excellent track record of clinical research in depression and cardiovascular disease and has an ongoing appointment with the Baker IDI. David also has a long history of innovative teaching of undergraduates and postgraduates in psychiatry, as well as providing clinical treatment for many patients with complex mental disorders. He will be at MAPrc on a part-time basis. Welcome Professor Barton

Kylie White is working as an Events volunteer, assisting with the organisation of the Fun Run. Her work interests are in marketing. She is from Australia and her interests are in mental health, trauma, running and property.

 

 

 

 

Wei Lin Toh is a research officer , working with Professor Susan Rossell. Her work interests are in eye- tracking in body dysmorphic disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder.

Also auditory verbal hallucinations in bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder.

Wei Lin is from Singapore and enjoys travel , trying new foods, has a passion for animal welfare and especially loves dogs.

 

Monash online OHS hazard and incident reporting system: Thu 10 Jul 2014 11 am -12 noon and 1-2 pm

Monash University is soon to implement an online OHS hazard and incident reporting system the first module in the Safety And Risk Analysis Hub or SARAH. The user-friendly and intuitive system will replace the current paper based process and will provide supervisors and managers with live and accurate information on events reported in their areas while reducing the time and effort required to investigate and action reported hazards and incidents. Info sessions: 10 July 11-12 & 1-2 pm.

It is with great sadness that the Gastroenterology Department at Central Clinical School announces the passing of a dear colleague and friend, Amanda Banfield.  With Amanda’s meticulous, dedicated, loyal and committed nature to her work, she was a remarkable research dietitian and an asset to our team.  Besides Amanda’s incredible work ethic - her kindness, warmth, and her love of music, nature, animals, food and ‘good’ tea and coffee, are just some of the things by which we will fondly remember her. Amanda will be greatly missed by all.  The Funeral to Celebrate the Life of Amanda Banfield will be held at Zonzo, 957 Healesville - Yarra Glen Rd, Yarra Glen on TUESDAY (June 10, 2014) commencing at 2.00 p. m. At Amanda's request those attending the celebration are asked not to wear all black. Dr Marina Carpinella has joined Professor Stephen Jane's Epidermal Development Laboratory, Department of Medicine as a Research Fellow. She comes to Monash from the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, where she was working on the genetics of hearing loss. Here, Marina will be working with Dr Seb Dworkin on the genetic origins of craniofacial development. For more about that research, see story.
