Postgraduate symposium call for abstracts

Central Clinical School invites you to attend the 2014 Annual Postgraduate Research Symposium.

Students have the opportunity to explain their research to other students and by participating, will foster collaborations, networking and a greater awareness of the expertise and research being conducted at AMREP. Current PhD students will be running the program, including chairing the presentations: Ms Jodie Abramovitch (chair), Ms Kay Sin Lee, Ms Sara Mohktar, Mr Timothy Colgan and Mr Man Kit Lee, assisted by Ms Dussy Kuttner.   Participants will be judged by a panel of senior academics and postdocs. Congratulations! Damien Saulep-Easton and Charbel Darido win travel grants

Damien Easton awarded MCCC travel grant 

Congratulations to Damien Easton on receiving the Monash Comprehensive Cancer Consortium (MCCC) travel grant. The travel grant is awarded by the Monash Comprehensive Cancer Consortium (MCCC) to fund attendance at the International Keystone Symposium on Tumor Immunology, in Canada in 2015. Damien will be presenting his work on Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) which is the most common leukemia in adults and is currently not curable. Read more »
Dr Charbel Darido, Department of Medicine, was awarded a 2014 MCCC travel grant to participate in the Cutaneous Biology meeting at North Stradbroke Island in Queensland. He will be giving an oral presentation about the identification of novel targets for the treatment of squamous cell carcinoma in skin and head & neck.

The 2013 AMREP research report is now available online

The annual AMREP Research Report for 2013 is now available online. The report provides a comprehensive overview of the research programs conducted by institutions and departments at the Alfred Medical Research and Education Precinct (AMREP). AMREP is a collaborative partnership between Alfred Health, Monash University, Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, Burnet Institute, La Trobe University and Deakin University based at the Alfred Health site. It is a leading centre for integration of biomedical and clinical research, education and health care.

de Castella Run 2014 raises $80,000 for mental health research

2014 de Castella run broke its own records,  raising close to $80,000 to help increase awareness and funds for mental health research at Monash Alfred Psychiatry Research Centre (MAPrc). Approximately 2,000 people participated.  Story link.

03/09/2014 Professor Peter Gibson, Head of the Department of Gastroenterology, commented on people with gluten free diets, who don't have gluten intolerances.   He said that when people go gluten-free, they also buy fresh food, cook at home, and generally eat healthier.  People feel better just because they're looking after themselves. Staff news

Farewell to Dr Charles Hardy, from the Department of Immunology. Charles has taken up a position as Research Operations Manager, Monash Biomedical Imaging, 770 Blackburn Rd (next to the synchrotron). Congratulations Charles on the new job.


Prof Sharon Lewin, Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases has taken on the role of Director at the new Peter Doherty Institute, University of Melbourne. Sharon and co-head A/Prof Paul Cameron are moving with their  research group to the Institute by 5 Sept 2014. The group includes Dr Vanessa Evans, Dr Jenny Anderson, Dr Suha Saleh, Dr Renee van der Sluis, Dr Hao Lu, Dr Jennifer Audsley, Dr Christina Chang, Dr Megan Crane, Dr Michael Roche, Dr Miranda Smith, Ajantha Solomon, Karey Cheong, Surekha Tanakoon, Ashanti Dantanarayana, PhD students Fiona Wightman, Nitasha Kumar, Simin Rezaei, Dr Kasha Singh, Dr Michelle Yong, and honours students Youry Kim and Michael Moso. Support staff Sandra West (PA), and Dr Jasminka Sterjovski (Research Manager) have also moved.
